1931 • Voldemar Päts • 4 min

(Estonia)

The first Estonian animated film, long thought to be lost and rediscovered in 1986, Kutsu-Juku seiklusi tells the story of a lovable dog who encounters various animals in different situations during his journey. This short film, which openly borrows from Walt Disney’s early cartoons, has not survived in its entirety, but even in its incomplete form it is a delightful and refreshing addition to the canon of silent animated films.

1914 • Tõnis Nõmmits • 14 min

(Estonia)

The most famous work of the Estonian Johannes Pääsuke can be viewed from two angles. On the one hand, it can be seen as a political satire targeting the mayor of Pärnu and his rival, a newspaper journalist, who in the story is represented by an enormous honey-loving bear living in the nearby forest. It can also be admired as a depiction perfectly suited to our own time of the alienation between humans and nature: the well-dressed bourgeois citizens, foolishly dashing criss-cross through the forest, imagine themselves to be great woodsmen with their guns and swords, but in reality they are precisely the kind of people who, in situations like these, ought to stay safely at home behind carefully locked doors and leave the task of dealing with predators to professionals. At the time of its release, the film was a genuine audience favorite.

1925 • Karel Lamac • 36 min

(Czechoslovakia)

When the painter Johnny Miller, on his way home from a party, makes a bet with his friends that he can find his way home even with his eyes blindfolded, a chain of events begins that leads Johnny into a series of strange situations. Made in the spirit of American slapstick masters, this light-hearted film is one of the lesser-known screen appearances of Anny Ondra (born Anna Ondrakova), remembered as Sir Alfred Hitchcock’s first blonde. Director Karel Lamač plays the male lead, and several familiar faces from Czech cinema appear in supporting roles. A full-length print of the film has been lost, but even in its shortened form it remains easy to follow.
