The first official directing job of Sir Alfred Hitchcock was a British-German collaboration The Pleasure Garden. It is a melodramatic tale about a young girl dreaming of becoming a dancer, her friend, and their wavering relationships. Hitchcock's stylish directing makes the film a pleasant watch, helped by gorgeous exterior shots of Italy. The star Virginia Valli made a noteworthy career in the USA, until she retired once "talkies" became the new norm.
