Sangue Mineiro

Humberto Mauro’s masterwork, Sangue Mineiro, tells the story of Carmen, disillusioned in love, who decides to take her own life. A group of young men who happen upon the scene save her, and in time they too fall in love with her. The simple story is filmed and narrated with such control that the viewer can easily immerse themselves in its world. The acting is restrained throughout, and especially the lead performance by Carmen Santos—who also served as the film’s producer—proves to be of international caliber. Sangue Mineiro is a strong contender for the finest Brazilian silent film of all time.
